The IELTS Listening section takes approximately 30 minutes and includes 40 questions across four recorded sections. The IELTS exam format assesses your ability to understand conversations and monologues in different everyday and academic situations.

IELTS Listening Section Part 1

Task Format

Skills Assessed

Conversation between 2 speakers

Listening for specific information, identifying key details, understanding factual information, and following an everyday conversation

How To Answer The Questions:

In this task, you will listen to a conversation between two people and answer the questions based on the information you hear. You may need to complete a form, note, table, flow chart, or sentence, or choose the correct answer.

  • Quickly scan the questions before the audio begins and predict the type of answer you may need, such as a name, number, date, or place.
  • Use the words around each blank as clues and listen for information that matches the meaning, not just the exact words in the question.
  • Be alert for self-corrections or changes in the conversation, as the speaker may mention one detail and then replace it with another.
  • Write answers as you hear them and make sure they fit grammatically with the sentence. Check spelling, numbers, and the required word limit.
  • Keep moving with the recording. If you miss one answer, don't stop; move to the next question because the audio is played only once.

  • Pay attention to who says what and how the speakers respond to each other, as similar ideas may be discussed by different people.
  • Follow the discussion from one idea to the next and use the surrounding information to choose the most appropriate answer.
  • Check spelling and word limits carefully. If you miss an answer, move on quickly because the recording is played only once.

IELTS Listening Section Part 4

  • Preview the questions and underline important keywords to understand the topic and predict the information you need.
  • Follow the lecture carefully by listening for the main points, explanations, examples, and supporting details.
  • Notice signal words and changes in the speaker’s ideas, as they can help you understand how the lecture is organized.

IELTS Reading Part 1

Task Format

Skills Assessed

Reading passage followed by a set of questions

Understanding main ideas, identifying key details, locating specific information, and reading for factual information

How to Answer the Questions:

In this task, you will read a passage and answer questions using information from the text.

  • Read the passage carefully to understand the main topic and overall meaning.
  • Identify the key details and factual information related to each question.
  • Use the questions to locate specific information within the passage.
  • Focus on the meaning of the text rather than looking only for exact words from the question.
  • Check the surrounding context to make sure you have identified the correct information.
  • Review your answers to ensure they accurately reflect the information given in the passage.

IELTS Reading Part 2

Task Format

Skills Assessed

Reading passage followed by a set of questions

Interpreting the overall meaning, recognising supporting points, finding relevant information quickly, and understanding information presented as facts.

How To Answer the Question:

In this task, read the passage and use the information provided to answer each question. Focus on understanding how the ideas are presented and how they relate to one another.

  • Identify the main focus of each paragraph as you read.
  • Notice words that show contrast, cause, examples, or changes in ideas.
  • Match questions with the relevant section of the passage.
  • Consider the writer’s meaning rather than relying only on individual words.
  • Eliminate options that contradict the passage or are only partially correct.
  • Review your answers to ensure they are supported by the text.

IELTS Reading Part 3

Task Format

Skills Assessed

Reading passage followed by a set of questions

Understanding the overall message, recognising important details, finding relevant information, and interpreting factual content accurately.

How to Answer the Questions:

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions by analysing the ideas, arguments, and evidence presented.

  • Pay attention to the writer’s position and how it is developed.
  • Separate the main argument from examples or evidence used to support it.
  • Compare different opinions or viewpoints mentioned in the passage.
  • Use surrounding sentences to understand unfamiliar ideas or references.
  • Watch for qualifying words such as some, often, mainly, or however, which can change the meaning.
  • Choose answers that are fully supported by the passage, not simply those that sound reasonable.

Types of Tasks in IELTS Reading

Multiple choice

Choose the correct answer from the options provided based on the information in the passage. These questions may assess your understanding of specific facts, the writer’s opinion, or the overall meaning of the text. Read the relevant section carefully, look for supporting evidence, and watch out for options that appear correct but do not fully match the passage.

Identifying information (True/False/Not given)

Decide whether each statement agrees with the information presented in the passage. True means the statement agrees with the text, False means it contradicts the text, and Not Given means the information is not stated clearly. This task tests your ability to compare statements with the passage and distinguish between contradictory and missing information.

Identifying writer’s views/claims (Yes/No/Not given)

Determine whether each statement reflects the writer’s opinion, view, or claim. Yes means the writer agrees, No means the writer disagrees, and Not Given means the writer does not express a clear view on the statement. These questions require you to understand the writer’s viewpoint and recognise opinions that may be expressed through paraphrased language.

Matching information

Match specific pieces of information with the correct paragraph or section of the passage. The information may refer to examples, reasons, explanations, facts, or descriptions. This task tests your ability to scan the passage efficiently and locate specific details without relying on the order in which the information appears.

Matching headings

Select the most appropriate heading for each paragraph from the list provided. The correct heading should capture the main idea of the paragraph rather than focus on a minor detail. To answer accurately, identify the central message of each paragraph and distinguish it from supporting information or examples.

Matching features

Match statements or pieces of information with the relevant people, places, theories, categories, or other features mentioned in the passage. Some options may be used more than once, while others may not be used. This task assesses your ability to identify connections between specific information and the features described in the text.

Matching sentence endings

Complete unfinished sentences by selecting the appropriate ending from the options provided. The completed sentence should be grammatically correct and accurately reflect the information in the passage. This task tests your understanding of meaning, context, and how different ideas are connected within the text.

Sentence completion

Complete sentences by filling in the missing words using information from the passage. Follow the stated word limit carefully, as using too many words can make an answer incorrect. This task tests your ability to locate precise information and select words that fit both the meaning and grammar of the sentence.

Summary/note/table/flow-chart completion

Complete a summary, set of notes, table, or flow chart using information from the passage. The missing details may require you to identify key facts, follow a sequence, or understand how different ideas are connected. Pay attention to paraphrasing and the word limit when selecting your answers.

Diagram label completion

Complete the labels on a diagram using information from the passage. The diagram may represent a process, structure, machine, or concept described in the text. These questions test your ability to connect written descriptions with visual information and select the correct words while following the given instructions and word limit.

Short-answer questions

Answer direct questions using information from the passage. Your answers must follow the specified word limit and should contain the information required by the question. This task tests your ability to quickly locate specific details, understand factual information, and provide concise and accurate answers.
