What Your IELTS Band Score Means

Your overall band score is what universities, employers and immigration authorities look at, but each of them may also set a minimum for individual sections. Knowing both numbers tells you whether you have met the requirement or need to retake.

How To Calculate IELTS Scores

You can calculate your overall IELTS band score in just a few seconds using our IELTS Band Score Calculator. Simply enter your scores for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The IELTS overall score calculator adds all four sections and then calculates the result. It then applies the official IELTS rounding rule to show your final band score. Your overall result is displayed instantly and accurately.

IELTS Band Score Chart: Correct Answers to Band

Listening and Reading are marked out of 40, with one mark per correct answer and no penalty for a wrong one. Those raw scores convert to a band using a fixed table. Writing and Speaking work differently: examiners assess them directly against band descriptors, so there is no raw score to convert.

The same Listening conversion applies to Academic and General Training. Reading is different: General Training texts are less demanding, so more correct answers are needed for the same band.

what-actually-counts

Overall Band or Section Scores: What Actually Counts

Your overall band is the number most people quote, but it is rarely the only one being checked. Universities and immigration authorities usually set a minimum for each individual section alongside the overall requirement.

This is where candidates get caught out. An overall band 7.0 built from 8.0 in Listening, 7.5 in Reading, 6.5 in Speaking and 6.0 in Writing still fails a requirement asking for 6.5 in every section, even though the overall number is met. The lowest section decides it, not the average.

Before you book a retake, check whether you are short on the overall band or on one section. If it is one section, an IELTS practice test for that skill alone is a faster route than sitting the whole exam again.
