Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four section scores, rounded using the official IELTS rule. For example, 6.5 in Listening, 7.0 in Reading, 6.0 in Writing and 7.5 in Speaking averages 6.75, which rounds up to an overall band 7.0. An average of 6.125 would round down to 6.0.

A good IELTS band score depends on what you need it for. Most undergraduate courses ask for band 6.0 to 6.5, postgraduate courses usually ask for 6.5 to 7.0, and skilled migration programmes often expect 7.0 or above. The IELTS Academic and General Training tests are scored using the same band system (0-9) for each section. However, the content of the tests differs. IELTS Academic assesses English skills for academic purposes, while IELTS General Training is designed for those applying for migration or non-academic training programs. Although both are scored on the same scale, the requirements for immigration or academic acceptance may differ based on the type of test you take.

You need roughly 30 out of 40 correct answers for band 7 in IELTS Listening. The exact number can vary slightly between test versions, so treat the band score chart on this page as a close guide rather than a fixed rule.
