IELTS Result and Scoring Guide 2026

An IELTS result shows how well you performed in the four skills tested in the exam: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Your performance is reported using the IELTS 9-band scale, with scores ranging from Band 0 to Band 9.

Your IELTS result includes an individual band score for each section and an overall band score, which represents your combined performance across all four skills.

How Is the IELTS Overall Band Score Calculated?

IELTS scores are reported in whole and half bands, such as 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0. Your IELTS test result includes a separate band score for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, along with an overall band score. Each skill reflects a different aspect of your English proficiency:

  • Listening: Your ability to understand spoken English in different situations.
  • Reading: Your ability to understand and interpret written texts.
  • Writing: Your ability to present ideas clearly and effectively in writing.
  • Speaking: Your ability to communicate confidently and effectively in spoken English.

IELTS Writing Score

Unlike Listening and Reading, IELTS Writing is not scored by counting correct answers. Examiners assess your written responses using four scoring criteria.

IELTS Writing Assessment Criteria

Task Achievement / Task Response

  • This measures how effectively you address the requirements of the question. In Task 1, this is called Task Achievement, while in Task 2, it is called Task Response.

Coherence and Cohesion

  • This looks at how clearly you organize your ideas and how effectively you connect information and arguments throughout your response.

Lexical Resource

  • This assesses the range of vocabulary you use and how accurately and appropriately you use it to communicate your ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

  • This considers the variety of grammatical structures you use, and how accurately and appropriately you use them.

IELTS Speaking Score

The IELTS Speaking test is assessed by a certified examiner throughout the interview. Your performance is evaluated using four equally weighted criteria. The average performance across these criteria determines your Speaking band score.

IELTS Speaking Assessment Criteria

Fluency and Coherence

  • This assesses how smoothly you communicate, how well you develop your answers and how logically you connect your ideas.

Lexical Resource

  • This looks at the range, accuracy and appropriateness of the vocabulary you use to express your meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

  • This measures the variety of grammatical structures you use and how accurately you apply them.

Pronunciation

  • This assesses how clearly you produce spoken English and how easily the examiner can understand what you say.

IELTS Score Requirements

Your IELTS score depends on your purpose and destination. Check the sections below for specific requirements.

IELTS Score for Studying Abroad

Universities and colleges set their own IELTS requirements. The required score may depend on:

  • University: Each institution can set its own minimum score.
  • Course: Certain courses may have higher English language requirements.
  • Overall band: Some institutions specify a minimum overall IELTS score.
  • Individual sections: You may also need to achieve a minimum score in each skill.

Always check the official requirements of your chosen university and course before booking your test.

IELTS Score for UK Visa

IELTS requirements for UK visas depend on the visa category and the English language level required for that route.

In some cases, applicants may need to take an IELTS for UKVI test. The required score can vary depending on the type of application.

Check the latest requirements on the official UK government website before choosing your test.

IELTS Score for Immigration

Immigration requirements vary by country, immigration programme and visa category. Some programmes may also use different ways of assessing your English proficiency.

For accurate requirements, check the official immigration authority of the country and programme you are applying to.

What If You Are Not Happy With Your IELTS Result?

If you are not satisfied with your IELTS result:

1. Request a Review

If you believe your IELTS result does not accurately reflect your performance, you can request a review of your scores.

2. Score Reassessment

The review allows your test results to be reassessed to check whether your scores accurately reflect your performance.

3. Possible Score Change

Following the review, your score may remain the same or be changed depending on the outcome of the assessment.

4. Check the Process

Before requesting a review, check the latest IELTS guidelines for the applicable process, fees, and timelines.

ielts-enquiry

IELTS Enquiry on Results (EOR)

Enquiry on Results (EOR) is the IELTS process for requesting a review of your test result.

You can request a review of one or more sections:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

The reviewed sections are assessed again by IELTS examiners. Your band score may remain the same or may increase following the review.

If your score changes, you will receive an updated result. EOR fees and refund conditions can vary, so check the applicable details before submitting your request.

3

Check Eligibility

One Skill Retake is available only to eligible test takers, and availability may depend on the test type and location.

4

Acceptance May Vary

Not every university, employer, or organization accepts One Skill Retake results, so check the requirements of the organization you are applying to.

5

Check Before Retaking

Make sure to confirm the latest availability, eligibility, and acceptance requirements before choosing this option.

IELTS Result Delays and Withheld Results

Why Can an IELTS Result Be Withheld?

  • IELTS may withhold a result when additional checks are required before it can be released.
  • These checks can relate to test security, identity, scoring or possible malpractice.
  • A withheld result does not automatically mean that the candidate has committed malpractice.
  • The result may be released once the necessary checks are completed.

IELTS Results Under Investigation

  • IELTS uses security measures to identify unusual or potentially suspicious test activity.
  • If a result requires further investigation, its release may be delayed.
  • Candidates should contact their IELTS test centre for information about an individual case.
  • If the delay remains unexplained, candidates can raise the matter through the official IELTS complaints process.

IELTS Result Errors and Corrections

  • IELTS has procedures for identifying and addressing errors that may affect test results.
  • If an error is confirmed, IELTS can take appropriate action, including correcting affected results.
  • Candidates who believe there is an issue with their result should contact their IELTS test center.
  • Any correction or further action depends on the circumstances of the case.
