How the IELTS Writing band score is calculated.
The IELTS Writing band score is based on your performance in Task 1 and Task 2. Both tasks are assessed by trained IELTS examiners using four criteria:
Each criterion is assessed on a 0–9 band scale. The four criteria are equally weighted within each task. However, the two tasks do not carry the same overall weight. Task 2 contributes twice as much as Task 1 to the final Writing band score. This makes your performance in Task 2 particularly important.
Your performance is first assessed separately for Task 1 and Task 2. The scores are then combined using the Task 2 weighting. For example, if you receive:
Task 1: Band 6.5
Task 2: Band 7.0
The weighted average is:
(6.5 + 7.0 + 7.0) ÷ 3 = 6.83, which is reported as band 7.0.
The final Writing score is reported using IELTS's established whole- and half-band scoring system. This is why simply averaging your Task 1 and Task 2 scores may not accurately reflect your final Writing band.
Note: If you want to estimate your result before the test, an IELTS Writing band calculator can help you understand how your performance across both tasks may translate into an overall Writing score. A writing band calculator is also useful for checking different Task 1 and Task 2 score combinations as you track your progress.

Use these practical tips to strengthen your writing skills and prepare with greater confidence for a Band 7+ score.
Learn what examiners look for in Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Understanding these criteria helps you focus your preparation on the areas that directly influence your Writing band score.
Read the question carefully and make sure your response addresses every part of it. Develop your main ideas clearly with relevant explanations and examples instead of adding information that does not directly support your answer.
Plan your response before you start writing and give each paragraph a clear purpose. Connect your ideas logically and use appropriate linking words so that your answer flows naturally from the introduction through the conclusion.
Focus on using a wide range of relevant vocabulary rather than simply choosing complicated words. Use words and phrases naturally, pay attention to collocations, and avoid repeating the same vocabulary throughout your response.
Use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures while maintaining grammatical accuracy. Identify the mistakes you make repeatedly and spend time correcting those patterns instead of trying to memorize complicated grammar rules.
Regular practice is important, but practice without feedback may not show you what is holding your score back. With Gurully, you can practice IELTS Writing tasks, review your performance, and identify areas that need focused improvement.
