Please note: Any attempt to predict a score on a particular test, based on the score observed on another test, will contain measurement error. This is a consequence of the inherent error in each of the tests in the comparison and in the estimate of the alignment. Furthermore, tests in the comparison do not measure exactly the same construct.

How the PTE and IELTS Conversion Works

The PTE and IELTS conversion is an estimated comparison between scores from two different English language proficiency tests:

Both tests measure English proficiency but use different scoring systems. To compare equivalent scores, universities, immigration authorities, and employers rely on the PTE to IELTS score calculator above.

How the conversion works

The conversion is not based on a mathematical formula. Instead, it is developed through statistical research where thousands of candidates take both exams. Experts analyze the results to determine which PTE scores correspond to specific IELTS band scores.

Even if two scores are considered equivalent, the tests differ in several ways:

  • Scoring method: PTE uses AI-based scoring, while IELTS combines human examiners (Speaking and Writing) with objective scoring for other sections.
  • Test format: Question types, timing, and task structure vary.
  • Skill assessment: Both measure Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, but the way these skills are tested is different.

Because of these differences, a direct one-to-one conversion isn't always possible.

Should You Switch from IELTS to PTE?

With IELTS now widely available in a computer-delivered format, the gap between IELTS and PTE has become much smaller. Both tests are computer-based, offer quick results, and are accepted by thousands of universities and organizations worldwide.

Instead of switching simply because PTE is computer-based, consider which test format better matches your strengths.

You may prefer PTE if you:

  • Are comfortable with AI-based scoring.
  • Prefer speaking into a microphone instead of talking to an examiner.
  • Like integrated tasks that assess multiple language skills.

You may prefer Computer-Delivered IELTS if you:

  • Want a computer-based exam but still prefer a face-to-face Speaking test with an examiner.
  • Are familiar with the IELTS question types and scoring criteria.
  • Have already prepared extensively for IELTS.

PTE vs IELTS Scoring System - What is the Difference?

Both PTE Academic and IELTS assess English language proficiency, but they use different scoring systems.

PTE Scoring System

  • PTE is scored on a 10–90 scale using AI-powered scoring. Your score report includes:
  • Overall Score (10–90)
  • Communicative Skills: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening
  • Enabling Skills such as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, oral fluency, etc.

Many PTE question types contribute to more than one skill score, providing an integrated assessment.

IELTS Scoring System

IELTS uses a Band Score from 0 to 9, reported in 0.5-band increments. You receive:

  • Individual band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
  • An Overall Band Score calculated from the average of the four sections
  • Listening and Reading are scored objectively, while Speaking and Writing are assessed by certified examiners.
