IELTS Revaluation: Everything You Need to Know About the Enquiry on Results Process

Getting your IELTS score back and finding it lower than expected is frustrating. It gets worse when a university offer, a visa, or a job depends on that number. The good news is that IELTS lets you challenge your results. The official process is called Enquiry on Results, or EOR. What Is IELTS Revaluation?

IELTS revaluation is the official channel for asking that one or more sections of your exam be re-marked. This isn’t a casual second look, as your paper goes to a senior examiner. That examiner has no idea what score you originally received and the re-marking is done independently and without bias.

You don’t have to review your entire test and can pick just one section, like Writing or Speaking. Or you can request a full re-mark covering all four: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

There’s no limit on how many times you can apply, technically, but each request costs money, so most candidates think carefully before submitting one. It helps to know exactly why you feel the score is wrong before you start the process.

Who Handles the IELTS Exam Revaluation Process?

IELTS is jointly run by the British Council, IDP IELTS, and Cambridge Assessment English. Your application goes through whichever organization conducted your test. The steps are broadly the same either way:

• Log in to your test taker portal or account with the organization you booked through
• Go to the completed exams or results section and pick the relevant test date

How Long Does IELTS Revaluation Take

Processing times vary. It depends on how many sections you’ve asked to be reviewed and how busy the center is. Officially, results can come back anywhere between a couple of hours and 21 days.

What Happens to Your Score

• Your score can only go up or stay the same. It cannot decrease
• If your band score changes in any section, you get a new Test Report Form
• If there’s no change, your original result still stands.

The EOR fee is refunded in full if your score changes, but not if it stays the same

What is IELTS Revaluation Success Rate, and is it Worth Applying for?

This depends heavily on which section you’re unhappy with. Listening and Reading are scored against a fixed answer key. This is especially true on computer-delivered tests, so there’s very little room for a mark to shift unless something went technically wrong. Writing and Speaking are different; they involve human judgment, which is why these two sections see score changes far more often.

A few practical points worth keeping in mind before you apply:

• If you missed your target band by more than half a point, a revaluation probably won’t close that gap
• Score movement happens most often in Writing and Speaking, rarely in Listening or Reading
• If two examiners’ marks differ a lot on the same section, some centers bring in a third examiner
• Consider retaking the test instead if you feel your overall performance was genuinely weak, not just borderline

How to Check Your Revaluation Result

Once the review is done, you’ll usually get an email. The updated result also shows up in your candidate account. If your score has changed, you’ll need to collect or exchange your new Test Report Form. In some cases, you may need to return the original TRF first.
