If you’ve started looking into UK visas, chances are you’ve already bumped into a wall of confusing terms – SELT, CEFR, UKVI, Life Skills, and about five versions of IELTS that all sound alike. It’s a lot. Most students and workers just want a straight answer to one question: which IELTS test do I need, and what score gets me through? Most of the time, IELTS for UKVI is the answer. Read to learn how.

What Is IELTS for UKVI?

IELTS for UKVI stands for IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration. In simple terms, it’s a Secure English Language Test, or SELT, that the UK Home Office has approved for people applying to live, work, or study in the UK.

Here’s the thing people often miss:

  • IELTS for UKVI isn’t a separate exam with different questions.
  • It’s a specific, government-recognized version of the regular IELTS test, delivered under stricter security conditions.
  • UKVI requires this because immigration applications carry more legal weight than a university admission form, so an extra layer of verification is built in.

Under UKVI there are five tests:

  • IELTS for UKVI (Academic)
  • IELTS for UKVI (General Training)
  • IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1
  • IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A2
  • IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1

One important rule to remember: UKVI will only accept a test taken in person at an officially approved IELTS for UKVI test center. Not every IELTS center offers the UKVI version, so check this before you book anything.

IELTS for UKVI vs Normal IELTS: The Difference

This confuses almost everyone at first, so let’s clear it up. In terms of content, format, scoring, and difficulty, IELTS for UKVI and standard IELTS are identical. Same Listening section, same Reading passage style, same Writing tasks, same Speaking interview structure.

So what actually changes?

  • Where you can take it – Only centers approved by the UK Home Office can offer the UKVI version. These centers are fewer in number than regular IELTS centers.
  • Your Test Report Form (TRF) – A UKVI test report looks slightly different and carries a UKVI reference number that immigration officials can verify directly.
  • Identity checks – Because it’s used for legal visa purposes, ID verification on test day is usually stricter.
  • Purpose of use – A standard IELTS Academic score works fine for most university applications outside the UK immigration system, but it typically won’t be accepted for a Student visa or other UKVI-linked applications.

If a visa application is involved, you need the UKVI version specifically – check your course level and visa route before booking, because taking the wrong one can genuinely derail your application timeline.

The main difference is where and under what conditions the test is delivered. If you’re unsure about the differences between IELTS Academic and General, it’s worth understanding the purpose of each before booking.

IELTS UKVI Academic

This version is built for people planning to study in the UK or apply for professional registration there. If your course is below degree level (think foundation programs or pre-sessional English courses), UKVI Academic is usually the one required.

It tests your ability to handle more formal, academic English: understanding complex reading passages, writing structured essays, and following academic-style listening content.

IELTS for UKVI General Training

General Training leans more practical. Instead of academic essays and dense reading passages, it focuses on everyday and workplace English – the kind of language used in situations like reading a workplace memo or writing a letter of complaint.

This version tends to suit people who are:

  • Applying for a work-related visa route
  • Heading to the UK for training or a non-degree course
  • Applying through certain family or settlement routes that require the four-skills test rather than Life Skills
  • If your plans in the UK are less about lecture halls and more about employment or general settlement, General Training is usually the more relevant path.

IELTS Life Skills

Life Skills is a different beast altogether, and it’s worth understanding properly because a lot of applicants don’t realize it exists until their visa category specifically demands it.

A few key points about it:

  • It only assesses Listening and Speaking – there’s no Reading or Writing component at all.
  • Results are given as a Pass or Fail, not a band score.
  • It comes in three levels: A1, A2, and B1, each tied to a different CEFR requirement.
  • The test itself is short, generally somewhere between 16 and 22 minutes.

Life Skills is commonly required for family visa routes, extending permission to stay, settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain), and British citizenship applications. If you’re applying as a partner, family member, or for long-term settlement, there’s a good chance Life Skills – not the four-skills UKVI test – is what you actually need.

UKVI IELTS Requirements by Visa Type

Here’s where things get specific, because the CEFR level and score you need depend entirely on your visa category. Based on current UK government guidance shared through the official IELTS site, some of the common routes look like this:

These requirements do get updated by the Home Office from time to time, so treat this as a solid starting point rather than the final word – always cross-check against GOV.UK or your receiving institution before booking your test.  You can also use an IELTS band score calculator to understand how your scores add up.

IELTS UKVI Registration

Booking your test isn’t complicated once you know the steps, but a few details trip people up regularly.

  • Choose the right test first. Decide between IELTS for UKVI Academic, General Training, or one of the Life Skills levels based on your visa route. Booking the wrong type is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes applicants make.
  • Go through an official provider. You can register via ielts.org, or directly through the British Council or IDP IELTS websites, depending on which organization runs UKVI testing in your country.
  • Find an approved UKVI center. Use the test center locator and filter specifically for “IELTS for UKVI” – standard IELTS centers won’t necessarily offer this version.
  • Create an account and select a date. You’ll pick your location, confirm availability, and in many cases choose whether your Speaking test happens on the same day or separately.
  • Have a valid passport ready. This is non-negotiable for UKVI tests. The same passport used at registration must be presented on test day – no exceptions, no substitutions.
  • Pay the test fee. UKVI test fees are usually slightly higher than standard IELTS, and payment is generally done online through the registration portal.

Once you’re registered, you’ll get a confirmation with your test date, venue, and any details about your Speaking test slot. Keep that confirmation email safe – you’ll likely need to reference it later. Also keep track of IELTS score validity and then decide the exam date.

FAQ:

What is the difference between IELTS and UKVI IELTS?
IELTS for UKVI is essentially the same IELTS test in terms of format, content, scoring and difficulty. The key difference is that IELTS for UKVI has additional security measures required by UK Visas and Immigration and must be taken at an official IELTS for UKVI test center.
Which IELTS UKVI test do I need: Academic or General Training?
For higher education at undergraduate or postgraduate level, IELTS for UKVI Academic is generally the appropriate test. IELTS for UKVI General Training is intended mainly for migration, work experience, training, and study below degree level. However, your exact requirement can depend on your visa route and institution, so you should check the requirements of your university and UK visa route.
What IELTS score is required for a UK student visa?
For a Student Visa, the English requirement is generally CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 for study below degree level or certain pre-sessional courses. Where IELTS for UKVI is used, B2 corresponds to at least 5.5 in each of the four skills, while B1 corresponds to at least 4.0 in each skill. Your university may require a higher score for admission.
Can I take IELTS for UKVI on a computer?
Yes. IELTS for UKVI can be taken on a computer at an official IELTS test center where the computer-delivered option is available. However, UKVI tests must be taken in person at an official test center. The IELTS UKVI test does not offer the Writing on Paper option.
