If you are planning to study, work or settle in Australia, your PTE score is more than a number on a report. It decides whether your visa application is eligible, which universities will consider you, and how many points you pick up for permanent residence. The confusing part is that Australia does not use a single PTE score for everything. The visa has one rule, each university has its own, and the PR points table has another set again. So here are all the PTE score requirements for Australia.
The August 2025 Change in PTE Scores: What It Means for You
On 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs changed the English tests and scores accepted for Australian visas. PTE Academic kept its name, but the scores attached to it are different now.
Tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 follow the new component scores in this guide.
Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 can still be used until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa.
Tests delivered fully online or at home are not accepted for visa purposes.
So the first thing to check is your test date. Two people with the same score can land in different categories depending on when they sat the exam.

PTE Score for Competent, Proficient and Superior English
Most Australian visas use three English levels. Home Affairs checks every skill separately, so a high overall score will not help if one skill falls short. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025:
| English level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | PR points |
| Competent | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 | 0 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 | 10 |
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 | 20 |
For older tests, the earlier rule was a flat 50, 65 and 79 in each skill. If a friend scored 79 in every skill last year, that was Superior for their test date. A new test needs the higher Writing and Speaking numbers above.

Student Visa PTE Score Requirement for Australia
For the Student visa (subclass 500), the minimum is an overall score, and it depends on how your course is packaged:
| Study pathway | Minimum overall PTE score |
| Direct entry into your main course | 47 |
| At least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or an eligible foundation or pathway program | 39 |
| At least 20 weeks of ELICOS | 31 |
This is only the visa minimum. Your university sets its own requirement, and it is usually higher. You can meet the visa rule and still miss admission, so plan around the university score first.
PTE Score for 485 and 482 Work Visas
The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) is the post-study work visa. For a test taken on or after 7 August 2025, you need 55 overall, with 40 in Listening, 42 in Reading, 41 in Writing and 39 in Speaking. Sources covering this visa also point to a 12-month window between your test and your application, so avoid sitting the exam too early.
For the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), the published scores are 33 in Listening, 36 in Reading, 29 in Writing and 24 in Speaking. This can vary by stream, so confirm it on the page for your subclass.
PTE Score for Australia PR (Subclasses 189, 190 and 491 (provisional))
For these skilled visas, Competent English is the minimum for eligibility, but it earns zero points. Since invitations are competitive, most applicants aim higher.
- Competent English (47, 48, 51, 54): eligibility only
- Proficient English (58, 59, 69, 76): 10 points
- Superior English (69, 70, 85, 88): 20 points
Your result must come from a test taken in the 3 years before you apply, and every skill needs its own number. Someone with 58, 58, 68 and 80 will miss Proficient English because Writing needs 69. Those 10 or 20 points are among the few parts of your score you can still improve with a few weeks of focused practice, which is why many people retake the test.

| Purpose | PTE Academic requirement | Points |
| Student visa, direct entry | 47 overall | None |

Common Mistakes Applicants Make
- Using old scores. Many guides still list 65 and 79 in each skill. That only applies to tests taken on or before 6 August 2025.
- Trusting the overall score. For skilled visas, Home Affairs looks at each skill. One weak section can cost you the whole level.
- Aiming for the visa minimum. A student visa score of 47 will not get you into most universities, which ask for 58 or more.
- Sitting the test too early. If you plan to apply for a 485 visa after graduation, a test taken at the start of your course may be too old.
- Choosing an online test. Remote or at-home tests are not accepted for Australian visas, so book a secure test center.
How Long Is Your PTE Score Valid in Australia?
- Skilled visas: the test must be within the 3 years before your application.
- Temporary Graduate visa (485): within 12 months of applying.
- Universities: Sydney, UNSW and UQ accept results up to 2 years old.
If you plan to study first and apply for PR later, you may need to sit the test again. A score that works for admission today may be too old when you apply for a skilled visa.
What to Check Before Booking Your PTE Test
- The score your university and course ask for, including each skill.
- The English rule for the visa you will apply for first, and the one you plan to apply for later.
- Whether your test falls before or after 7 August 2025.
- That you are booking PTE Academic at a secure test center, not an online version.
Many students plan only for admission. It is smarter to look at the PR requirement at the same time, because the jump from Competent to Proficient or Superior is bigger than most people expect, especially in Writing and Speaking.
How to Prepare for the Australian PTE Requirement
- Write down the required score for each skill, not just the overall score.
- Set your target a few points above the requirement.
- Spend extra time on Speaking and Writing, since they carry the highest numbers for Proficient and Superior English.
- Practice with timed, full-length mock tests and review your weak areas every week.
- Book your test early so you do not lose a seat close to your application date.
