Effective PTE Reading Fill in the Blanks Drop-Down Tips to Score High

First, read the full sentence:

  • Before selecting the options from the dropdown, read the entire sentence carefully. Once you read the sentence completely, the probability of the correct option will increase. You can guess the words by checking these things:
  • Is it a verb?
  • A noun?
  • An adjective?

Even if your prediction isn’t exact, it helps you eliminate wrong choices quickly. To detect these correctly, learn PTE focused vocabulary.

Focus on Collocations (Natural Word Pairs):

English has many fixed combinations:

  • “Take responsibility”
  • “Make progress”
  • “Heavy rain”

If a word sounds unnatural, it’s probably incorrect, even if it looks grammatically fine. You can also learn about collocation for guessing the correct answer.

Keep a check on grammar:

Most of the students lose marks in grammar and even a small mistake can mismatch the context of sentence. So while attempting this task, ask yourself:

  • Is the verb of correct tense?
  • Is subject agreeing with the verb?
  • The word from correct – noun, adjective or verb?

Use the elimination method:

Using the elimination method increases the chance of selecting the correct option. You can use it by doing:

  • Remove clearly wrong options first.
  • Narrow down your choices.
  • And select the option that is aligned with the context.

Do not miss prepositions:

Most of the time students miss prepositions, but they plays a important role. It gives you hint of the coming word like:

  •  “Interested in” (not interested in)
  • “Dependent on” (not dependent on)

Don’t panic over unknown words:

Even if you see a completely unknown word, do not worry and try to recognize it. Try to eliminate based on grammar and context. You can still get the correct answer without knowing every option.
